Default Do you/Will you play social games?

With the recent launch of Island Spore on Facebook, based on EA's Spore game, and today's launch of Cryptic's Champion Online Facebook game, together with the fact that FB is on Xbox and coming soon to PS3 (with deeper game integration), I was wondering if some people play these games or were planning to?

Spore Island is kind of enjoyable until you get stuck at biodiversity 0% due to having no friends (and not competing with leaderboard players). Although I have to say that it's a very resource-consuming application.

I probably won't, as it will likely turn into a spam ad fest, and thus a complete waste of time.

Zynga, the biggest FB game maker, doesn't use ads to make its huge revenues. I bet that they basically rely on FB's model, which already displays ads on the right-hand side (i.e., business model consolidation). So far I've seen that these games mostly use legalised RMT/micro-transaction, where you buy the in-game currency with money, but don't really need at a "really casual" level.

I play a few FB games, namely Mafia Wars and Be A Tycoon.

Seen yesterday: an ad in Facebook whose title was "Like Guild Wars". It's for the webgame Dark Orbit, which seems like a very lite version of an Eve-like 2d space mmo.

Strangely, FarmVille is not working for me at work since the beginning of the week.

Facebook games are pretty fun at first, but to me they just lose their appeal really fast. I mean, I was addicted to Restaurant City, now I'm rarely on it...

I agree Tyla, they reach their endgame very quickly or start feeling like an endless grind. But some are fun given the super-low time requirement, Mafia Wars is "meh" but I found Castle Age to be more fun when killing the large World Hydras in huge group of people (or smaller bosses in groups of friends, the ability to summon your monster with orbs is nice, and so are the "divinities" aspects)

Spore Island is sort of a limited version of the full game where you tweak a few parameters, it feels like programming an AI, but you reach a point where there's not much more to do, other than being in the top100 (meh...).

FarmVille is light fun, thanks to the graphical niceties and the very peaceful aspect of the game. Having a friend as a neighbour for who you fertilise crops feels good .

Being a little anti-social probably not, but fertilizing the neighbor's crops is very enticing.
